What do you think, currently, about the primary threshold concept for this project unit? (“Writing helps people make meaning and get things done, but there are always constraints.”) What do you think it means? Have you thought about this concept before reading about it in our textbook? If so, in what terms, or in what way, have you thought about this idea?
I agree with this concept. I think that writing can be very affective but I think some areas are left out, and this is where this concept can help to cover those areas. I think it means that we can come up with a creative way to present an idea or message to a group of people that everyone will understand. I have never thought of this idea before taking this class.
Answer question 1 from page 406 of Writing About Writing (at the end of Kain and Wardle’s introduction to activity theory): “Explain in your own words what an activity system is, and give three examples of activity systems with which you are familiar. For each of these systems, explain what its common motives and goals are.” You may provide brief, simplified explanations of the systems’ goals, if you wish.
To me an activity system is a group of people wanting to work together to meet a certain goal. Church, work and Bible study. I think Church and Bible Study go hand in hand because each want to bring you closer to GOD and show you his LOVE that he has for us. Work is a prime example of how people come together to get a certain task done. For me in the military we have inspections all the time. We communicate and as a team reach a certain goal that we need to.
Define “genre” in your own words, then answer question 2 on page 438 of Writing About Writing (at the end of Marro’s activity analysis): “In Marro’s exploration of how her sorority and another fraternity used the GIN system, how does she help you understand how genres are created by those who use them; reflect their users’ values, goals, and needs; and impact the work of those who use them?”
Genre is a way a group communicates to reach its goal. Her article helps me to understand how the GIN system works, by explain each part. If a message was important they would post it to both the message board and send a text message out to the girls. Its was and is an affective way to reach their goals, values and needs. If they needed to get something out to the girls then they could. And they could do it in a quick manner.
How many activity systems can you think of that use the Bible as a tool? How are the motives of these systems similar or different? Do you belong to any of these systems? Do the uses of the Bible in these systems differ, and, if so, how do these varying uses of the Bible affect the system’s goals?
I can think of a few groups that use the Bible as a tool. Church, and work are two that pop into my head. Church uses the Bible to get the word of GOD out there to the people. To help them understand God's Love. Work uses the Bible because it has to. I am in the military and it is required for us to have a Chaps and their job is to spread God's word on the ship.
Name one concept from this lesson that you most struggle(d) to understand. What about this concept, term, or idea is troublesome? What do you currently think it means, whether you feel certain or not?
I am struggling with this concept all together. i think i have a good idea down on how the activity systems use different genre's to communicate. but i just feel like i can learn more but i guess as i continue to write my paper and get feed back i will see if i am on the right track.
