Answer question 1 on page 317 of Writing About Writing (at the end of Mirabelli’s article): “How does Mirabelli begin his article? What can you infer from it about his intended audience(s) and purpose(s) from the way he begins? What are the effects for his audience of the way he begins?”

I think he starts out his article good, he gives the name of the website, so if you wanted too you can go to that website and see it for yourself. He gives examples of the hate mail posted abut serves at restaurants. He gives both the good and bad emails received. I think it effects his audience is a good way because he gives them a situation that almost everyone can relate to.

Answer question 7 on page 317 of Writing About Writing (at the end of Mirabelli’s article): “Do you now or have you ever participated in a discourse community that is strongly stereotyped in the ways that restaurant work is stereotyped (for example, a football team or sorority)? What are the stereotypes? Using Mirabelli, consider the various ‘multiliteracies’ of this discourse community.”

The closet I have ever come to this was my high school football team. Everyone thought they were just a bunch of "jocks." most people thought that since they were football players, that would be the only reason they would get through high school/ As people later came to find out, these guys were very smart and ended up making better life choices than most people did. This is just on example of how some people can be quick to judge others just based off of what little they know of a person.

Answer question 1 on page 347 of Writing About Writing (at the end of Klass’s short essay): “Klass describes entering the hospital as a medical student ‘in a state of primeval innocence’ but quickly learning all the ‘endless jargon and abbreviations’ (para. 2). What she is describing is the process of enculturating into a discourse community. How does this kind of enculturation happen in general?”

I can relate to this actually, being in the military we have our own language we speak sometimes. It is something that you have to get use to. Once you are in that surrounding for so long it becomes second nature to a person. She describes it good. She refers back to when she first began doing medical work and shows how she has grown into it.

Choose any other question featured at the ends of Mirabelli’s and Klass’s contributions to Writing About Writing, then answer it. Include the chosen question with your response.

Question 6 PG 317- Mirabelli argues that literacy in the dinner includes not only reading the menu but also reading the customers. Do you agree that reading customers is a form of literacy? Why or why not?
I agree with this statement, that reading customers is a form of literacy. He states that the menu is a main form of communication between the servers and the customers. What the customer orders could be a good indication of how much they might be willing to tip. If they order expensive or a lot of food then they might be more likely to give a bigger tip.

Question 2 PG 347- Klass explains that doctors always make patients the subject of the verb: "He dropped his pressure" or Mrs Bacon failed chemotherapy". What is the difference between talking about patients in that way, versus saying "His blood pressure fell" or "chemotherapy did not help her" What role does the phrasing give to the patient? What role does the phrasing give the doctor? What purpose does this kind of phrasing serve for doctors working every day in a hospital setting?
I think that this form of talking is good for many reasons. it gives the patient more of a personal feel to the doctor. It means that they are paying attention and learning certain things about the patients. I think it also good because the doctor and staff have a form of communicating that will not alarm other patients there. Thy use code words so people will not get scared. I think it helps the doctors and staff that work in these hospitals to be better as a team and helps them to understand each other.

Name one concept from this lesson that you most struggle(d) to understand. What about this concept, term, or idea is troublesome? What do you currently think it means, whether you feel certain or not?
So a few days ago I would have answered this question differently. After I have been studing and read on this subject for a few days I think I am getting a better understanding of it. There is not much that I am struggling with. I guess I will see when I turn in my draft of my paper and see what I need to work on. I feel like I have the ideas down good though.
