Answer question 5 from page 170 of Writing About Writing (at the end of Young’s argument against code switching): “Young argues that asking black students to use a different language at school than they do at home is a form of racial segregation. Explain this argument.” Do you agree? Why or why not?
I will say that i agree with his point. From my experiences with this, not in school but at work, sometimes it is easier for blacks to communicate using a different language. I have seen positive outcomes and hostile situation defused by black's using their " home language". I also think that in schools it need to be taught, but there needs to be a understanding on it from all parties involved, weather its the students or teachers.
Answer question 2 from page 243 of Writing About Writing (at the end of Pasqualin’s narrative): “Earlier, we asked you to mark places where Pasqualin references other readings in this book. Go back to your markings and consider how he used those sources. What did he do with them? Why did he use them? How do they help introduce his own ideas? Are there any places where Pasqualin’s use of other sources seems like a stretch to you?”
He used these writings to help give the reader a view of what he was talking about, given the read actually new the writings he was referring to. He used some of them as an example to the value of something, on pg 237, his mother thought his books were junk but he valued them much higher. He would use certain book titles/ authors to help compare the ideas in his writings to show how he agreed with a subject.. i am not going to lie, i had to look up most of these writing/books he mentioned, i did not read a lot of them, but i think he used them in a good way and i do not think he stretched any of them out.
Have you ever had a job that requires using special language? If so, how did you learn the specialized literacies required there? ( Page 243, question 4.)
There are time's in my job where i need to use special language. Being in the military we use codes a lot. It took a while for me to learn all of the code words that we need to know, about a year time. It took for me to practice and just go out into the field to learn them. I knew that one day it might mean the difference between life and death.
If applicable, describe some of your own experiences with “code switching” and/or “code meshing”? What feelings or associations come to mind when you reflect on these experiences?
One example of code switching i can give you is when i go on liberty in a foreign country. We are trained that when we are out enjoying some decompression in a foreign country, we need to be able to spot anything out of the normal. If we do see this then we switch to the code words that we were taught to get everyone our the the area and back to base safely.
Name one concept from this lesson that you most struggle(d) to understand. What about this concept, term, or idea is troublesome? What do you currently think it means, whether you feel certain or not?
I think for this lesson I am having a bit of an issue with my literacy sponsor's. I know what they are by definition but it is hard for me to come up with a lot of them. I know it said in the book that i might have dozens but i can actually only think of maybe about 10-12. Maybe i will just need to think more about it and maybe more will come to me.
